If You Hadn't Come Along
02:56
|

If you hadn't come along
I never would have left my old home town
If you hadn't come...
If you hadn't come along
I never would have know that I was missing out
If you hadn't come...
And I never would have know what it's like
To have something I'm afraid to lose
And to lose someone...
If you hadn't come along
I never would have known what I was looking for
If you hadn't come...

Come On, Love
02:30
|

Come on love, we've come too far
We've come too far not to try
Come on love, look where we are
We've come too far to say goodbye
Come on love, what's a couple miles?
What's a couple miles between friends?
Come on love, It's been hard for a while
But we just can't let this be the end
And I wish that you could have been a little stronger
And I wish that you could have waited a little longer
And I know you think that I should face the fact
That when you leave, darling, there just ain't no coming back
But come on love, I'm falling apart
I'm falling into the dark unknown
Come on love, I kept you in my heart
Don't make me carry you alone

Our Town
03:15
|

Emily lay in her grave
They'd put her in just yesterday
She looked up at the world outside
And her husband George laid down and cried
She said "Ma, they don't understand;
If I could just reach out my hand..."
She turned now to the dead and asked,
"Could I live just one day in my past?"
And they said "No, no, Emily now don't you go;
It just won't be the same as before
No, no, Emily now don't you go;
You know it's not your home anymore."
She said "I just want one day again;
I'll pick the day we first moved in."
And there she was with George himself
Placing trinkets on her shelf
She said "Oh George just look at me;
We're more happy now than we'll ever be."
But he could not hear what she said now
He just said "Em, I gotta go in to town."
And she said "No, no, oh Goerge now don't you go;
It just won't be the same as before
No, no, oh George now don't you go;
Someday you won't have this anymore."
So Emily sat all alone
And looked around their brand new home
She wished she'd known how young they were
Before they lost a child and he lost her
And something cut her to the bone
She said "Take me back now to my stone."
She asked the dead "Does anyone
Realize life before it's gone?"
And they said "No, no, Emily oh no they don't;
It's always been the same as before
No, no, Emily oh no they won't;
Not until it's not their home anymore."
So Emily lay in her grave
And in the town they went about their day...

Well I just came to get some things, and I'll try not to be long
Or linger on the colours in your hair
Or the way you sit and stare
As though I'd done something wrong
When you fill a space together, you know you build up quite the mess
It's hard to guess what you might want someday
And what you have to throw away
And neither makes your burden any less
And thank you for those records that you got me years ago,
Just so you know they help me for those times
When I can't sleep at night
And memories get caught in my throat
And I wish I'd come out to that film you said you wanted to go see,
It's silly and I know it wouldn't change
How we fell out of range
You'd just have one more good memory of me
And thank your dad for all he's done, he didn't have to be that nice
It's tough sometimes to let new people in
And I know times were hard for him
And no one likes to go through things twice
I'm all packed up, it's time to go, and you can walk me to the door,
But in my core I didn't just drop by
To say hello or goodbye
No this has to do with chores
But merry christmas to you and yours

Spring and Back
04:13
|
|||
I met you in the valley where it rains so long
That we forget the sun
'Til one day in spring I heard you sing like Miss Simone,
And I became undone
And I asked if you would sing again for me
And I could hardly believe when you agreed
That summer we hopped in the car and drove down the coast
To the Golden State
In Santa Monica we stopped to rest down by the docks
We saw that it was late
But you walked to the sea with all your clothes
And you said "Come in with me and we'll see how this goes!"
And I jumped with you...
Now I see the smokestacks rising on the open plain
from this dirty lake
And I think about those summers that we had but now
They seem so far away
Cause when we drifted apart I drifted in a haze
And I can't remember home and I have no sense of place
Since I jumped in with you...
But still I'd do it all again
You know I'd do it all again
Remember stealing glances and all your friends just knew?
Remember walking to your car and I didn't have a clue?
Remember playing pianos and I looked straight up at you?
Remember painting your room and boxing it up too?
Remember when we skipped the crowds and found our own lagoon?
Remember moving to the city, the skyline in the moon?
Remember how my fingers they moved up and down your spine?
Remember coming to your shows, how you came to all of mine?Remember campfires way up north among the wolves and pines?
Remember coming home and putting records on and wine?
Remember standing on the ledge and the river down below?
Remember twilight falling as a spark began to grow?
I'm sure you do...
And I will too.
